Bringing the River Into Our Daily Lives
Rio Grande Vision
The Rio Grande Vision (RGV) is about connecting Albuquerque to the river, while protecting the spectacular amenity and resource that flows through the heart of our community. The City hiredand their team of planners, engineers, designers, scientists, and economists to evaluate conditions, reach out to the community, and develop concepts that will protect the Rio Grande while making it an integral part of our lives.
The purpose of the visioning process was to consider ideas for the future of the Rio Grande corridor. The RGV is a conceptual visioning document that is full of ideas and concepts; it is not a blueprint for individual projects. The visioning process took place from August 2012 to August 2013 and is now complete.
Rio Grande Valley State Park Improvements
The City of Albuquerque is working on the first enhancement project to come out of the Rio Grande Vision. This project is called the Rio Grande Valley State Park (RGVSP) Improvements, which will include environmental monitoring, Bosque restoration, planning, design and construction from the Central Avenue bridge to I-40. Approximately $2.9 million has been allocated for this project.
Primary goals of the project include:
• Connect people to the Rio Grande & Bosque through recreation, education, stewardship and other quality of life opportunities.
• Protect the Bosque through restoration and conservation projects.
• Excite people with new ways to enjoy this wonderful natural resource.
The City is committed to development of projects that will align with the , which is an approved plan adopted in 1993 and was developed to guide management of resource and wildlife protection, recreation and education.
Project concepts include, but are not limited to, restoration, improved access, better parking, signage, ADA access, kayak and paddle board access, education and interpretive signage.
The City hired SWCA Environmental Consultants to conduct environmental monitoring in the project area. This work began in September of 2013 and will continue into 2014 and will set the stage for more detailed design so that a quality dialogue with the public can occur.
The project is currently in the design phase. There will be opportunities for public involvement as the project progresses.
