This project was initiated at the neighborhood’s request for improvements at the park.
After meeting with Parks & Recreation staff and representatives of the Huning Highland Historic District Neighborhood Association to assess the park’s needs and the neighborhood’s specific requests for improvements, a Master Plan process was initiated. Councilor Benton funded the planning process with District 3 set-aside funds.
A public meeting was held on February 6, 2011 to inform neighbors and stakeholders about the planning process and solicit input about potential changes and improvements. Surveys were provided at the meeting and also distributed through the Huning Highland and EDo Associations. A conceptual plan was developed and then presented at another public meeting on May 10, 2011. Additional feedback resulted in revisions; the final Master Plan conceptual rendering can be viewed here.
There is currently no funding in place for the construction of improvements, which is estimated at approximately $760,000. The project can be phased to allow funding and construction in smaller increments. The five proposed phases are:
- Phase 1 - New Children’s Play Area
- Phase 2 - Ridge (hill top), Access Walks, Furnishings, Irrigation Improvements
- Phase 3 - Improvements – Access Road, Renovate Retaining Walls, Plantings
- Phase 4 - Renovation of Existing Play Area
- Phase 5 - Terrace Plaza Area
